A guide for beginners
Fishing is not only about catching fish. It is a way of life, relaxation in nature, a lesson in patience and, above all, responsibility towards the environment. If you are drawn by the quiet by the water and the thrill of a bite, be prepared to deal with the paperwork before you cast your first line.
The route to a fishing licence
In Slovakia you cannot simply walk up to the water and start fishing (unless it is a private pond). You have to meet the legal requirements. The whole process usually takes several weeks.

A visit to your SRZ local organisation
1. Find an SRZ local organisation near you
2. Submit a membership application
3. Members are admitted: January – March ⚠️

Training and exams
1. Compulsory from the age of 15 ⚠️
2. Test: fish, the act, the decree, the statutes
3. Once you have passed, continue with step C

SRZ membership
1. Go back to your SRZ local organisation
2. You present your documents + birth number → a member ID is assigned ⚠️
Without your documents and birth number the system cannot assign you a member ID.
3. You pay the joining fee + membership fee
4. You buy a permit for the waters of your choice ✅
Ask your own organisation about the permits on offer. The result is a fishing permit booklet in which your visits and catches are recorded.

Fishing licence
The fishing licence is a state document issued by the municipality that entitles you to fish in Slovakia.
1. Visit the town, municipal or district office
2. You pay the administrative fee
3. Valid for 1 year or 3 years 💡
